The hypoxia inducible factors (HIF-1α and HIF-2α) are transcription factors that directly respond to hypoxic stress. After exposure of normal and cancer cells to hypoxia, a rapid increase of HIF-1α and HIF-2α heterodimerization with the HIF-1β protein (ARNT) occurs, leading to increased transcription of HIF target genes.
