       类胡萝卜素在自然界中由植物和许多微生物合成。动物可以以特有的方式代谢类胡萝卜素,但它们不能合成类胡萝卜素。类胡萝卜素是人类健康的重要因素。β-胡萝卜素和其他作为维生素A主要膳食来源的重要作用已广为人知,都很熟悉西红柿和胡萝卜等流行食物的橙红色以及许多花的黄色。类胡萝卜素不仅仅是陆生植物的色素。它们广泛存在于细菌,真菌和藻类中,在那里它们可以是有用的分类标记物。类胡萝卜素对于光合作用的植物是必需的,尤其是在防止破坏性光氧化作用中。没有类胡萝卜素,在含氧气氛中进行光合作用是不可能产生的。

    Product quality
The carotenoids are prepared either by extraction from natural sources or by chemical synthesis. Samples are supplied in sealed ampoules, under nitrogen, to ensure stability. Although the ampoules are labelled as 1 mg or 5 mg, these values are approximate. We guarantee, however, that the actual content will be not less than the stated amount.Whenever possible, they are supplied in crystalline form. All compounds are fully characterized and, on request, analytical data (HPLC, UV/Vis spectra) are provided with the samples.

        类胡萝卜素(carotenoids)广泛存在于动、植物和微生物界,1831年Wachenroder首次从胡萝卜根中结晶分离出胡萝卜素,之后Berzelius又从叶片中分离出叶黄素,随着生物物理技术的发展人们通过色谱分析的方法分离出一系列的天然色素,并名之为“类胡萝卜素”。从胡萝卜根中结晶分离出碳水化合物类的 色素,并以“胡萝卜素”命名,实际上,胡萝卜中所含有的类胡萝卜素主要是1,3-胡萝卜素。随着生物物理技术的发展,人们通过色谱分析的方法分离出一系列的天然色素,并命名为"类胡萝卜素"。

       "类胡萝卜素"具有共同的化学结构特征,分子中心都是多烯键的聚异戊二烯长链,以此为基础,通过末端的环化、氧的加入或键的旋转及异构化等方式产生出很多衍生物.目前,已知的类胡萝卜素的成员大概有600多种如番茄红素(Lycopene)、叶黄素(Lutein),隐黄质(Cryptoxanthin)、玉米黄质(Zeaxanthin)、虾青素(Astaxanthin)、a一,13-及Y-胡萝卜素(Q-/13-/Y-Carotene)等…。
       类胡萝卜素通常是由40个碳原子组成,8个异戊二烯单元首尾连接而成的四萜类化合物,这些异戊二烯单元的连接和排列在分子中心是反向的,在骨架的侧面具有甲基基团, 侧面甲基基团在骨架中心位置被6个碳原子分开(2个中间的甲基处于1,6-位关系,两个甲基中间有 6个碳原子),在骨架的其它位置被5个碳原子分开(甲基处于1,5-位关系,两个甲基之间有5个碳原子)。根据类胡萝卜素分子结构和溶解性的不同,将其分为两类:
(一)不含氧的烃类,即胡萝卜素类(carotenoids)。
胡萝卜素类广泛存在于高等植物和藻类中,结构特点是在分子中间2个异戊二烯是以 尾一尾相连的,这类化合物中存在碳一碳双键,理论上可能的顺反异构体是很多的,但在自然界存在 的这一类化合物大多数是全反式的构型,因为全反式的构型最稳定。如a-胡萝卜素、13-胡萝卜素、 Y-胡萝卜素番茄红素等都属于这一类色素,其易溶于石油醚、苯、氯仿等有机溶剂;
(二)胡萝卜素的含氧衍生物类,即叶黄素类(xanthophylls)。
叶黄素类在藻类色素中为数最多,其母体 与胡萝卜相似。但其为含氧胡萝卜素,即在分子两端的环中有不同数目的氧原子,是胡萝卜素氧化 的衍生物。
常见的叶黄素类有辣椒红素玉米黄素叶黄素等,能溶于甲醇、乙醇和石油醚。
