European Reference Materials are certified materials, which undergo uncompromising peer evaluation and offer highest quality and reliability.
They are a major tool for improving the confidence in, and the mutual recognition of test results and certificates in a global market. CRMs comply with high metrological requirements, ensuring traceability of measurements results, and are the end-point of the traceability chain, thus being primary standards in chemistry.

ERM标准物质：为有证标准物质（CRM），2004年由IRMM、LGC（英国政府化学实验室）、BAM（德国联邦材料测试研究院）合作推出。
已建立了ERM标准物质技术委员会，在标准物质分类、编码、技术性要求、申请、审核、批准方面已形成一套概括性的文件体系，原则上，标准物质的生产还必须符合ISO导则34的要求，每一合作成员均需通过其他成员的同行评审。ERM标准物质是在欧盟各国充分认识到标准物质国际互认的重要性及标准物质对国家测量校准能力互认（CMC-MRA）的重要支撑作用的基础上诞生的。也正因为如此，ERM的合作者必须是国际计量委员会国际互认（CIPM-MRA）的签署国指派实验室即各国国家计量院（NMI）。各国国家计量院主要通过参加由BIPM组织的国际比对来实现国家测量校准能力的互认，并以标准物质、测量校准服务等形式将该能力向国内外相关测量领域延伸，以推动测量结果的国际互认，在该过程中，标准物质所提供的特性量值也得到了间接互认，从而保证标准物质的公认权威性。相对于BCR标准物质而言，ERM标准物质目前有近150种。
IRMM标准物质：为IRMM自主认定的有证标准物质（CRM），现有一百余种,主要为浓缩同位素、同位素丰度、高纯物质、微生物、临床、材料、食品等领域标准物质。
质控标准物质（QCM）：为疯牛病测试用质量控制标准物质，不是有证标准物质。
欧盟标准物质所提供的特性量值中，认定值采用“Certified value”表示，未认定值采用“Uncertified value”、”Indicative value” 或“Additional information value”表示。所有BCR、ERM与IRMM认定标准物质证书基本可在IRMM网站上得到，大部分标准物质还能得到安全信息清单以及更为详细的定值报告，以弥补证书信息的不全。
